Video Demonstration: The Key To Incredible Guitar Picking Speed
By Tom Hess
What if there was a shortcut to playing with insanely fast guitar speed?
This shortcut comes in the form of a technique that the majority of guitar players don’t really understand even if they have heard about it.
(This is why so many people get stuck with their speed and can’t get to a higher level.)
Once you understand and master it — your guitar speed goes through the roof.
If you are unsure about this technique being as powerful as I am saying — I get it.
This is the reason why I made a video to showcase how this technique works. Watch it out and improve your speed quickly:
Like you saw in the video…
…Directional picking is the technique to use for insane speed.
I have shown it to tons of guitar players for over two decades and I encourage you to use this method for all your lead guitar for rock playing as well.
Okay, now you might be thinking to yourself:
“Tom Hess, if directional picking is such a good technique, why do so many well-known shred guitar players use only alternate picking?”
Answer: Simple. Directional picking isn’t as well known and hasn’t been used as long as strict alternate picking.
This means:
The majority of the famous guitarists from before 2010 were not taught to use this style of picking, and instead were shown alternate picking only.
They were able to develop fast speed while working around the inefficiencies that come with only using alternate picking. This took them longer and required much more work than was necessary.
You don’t have to work as hard to get their speed.
A great many of my guitar students now teach guitar speed shred lessons.
This is another question I get frequently regarding directional picking:
“Tom Hess, does directional picking only work for 3-note-per-string scales? What about for playing things like pentatonic scales or other scales?”
Answer: Directional picking can be used with anything you play.
Directional picking has the goal of using the most direct path to the next note you want to play.
Occasionally, this means using alternate picking.
And occasionally…
…the shortest path may require sweep picking.
Directional picking gives you the greatest efficiency and speed for the least amount of work.
Check out this video to see how to make your directional picking efficient and effortless:

Only using alternate picking to play everything leads to inefficient picking motion, which slows you down and causes mistakes.
This requires a lot more work (and practice) just to reach the same amount of speed.
Here is what you need to master directional picking:
So, what should you take away from this?
Directional picking is the one technique that gives you the power to play at the fastest speeds using the least effort.
