Playing guitar fast and clean requires flawless 2-hand synchronization. To develop your 2-hand synchronization to this level, practice using short bursts of speed.

Speed bursts = playing a quick burst of notes close to or above your top playing speed.

Here are 3 ways practicing with speed bursts develops your two-hand synchronization:

1. It is much easier to hear synchronization flaws at max speed, since you only play a few notes at a time.

Practicing in this manner makes you notice flaws you don’t see at slow tempos. This helps you understand what mistakes to look for when you slow down. This practicing approach is much more efficient than practicing mindlessly because you’re bored playing slowly for long periods of time. Playing at faster speeds engages your mind more and helps you get better results.

2. You train your ear to process notes at faster speeds (instead of hearing notes as an unintelligible blur).

Hearing notes distinctly at fast speeds is very important prerequisite for actually PLAYING fast and clean. Training in short speed bursts makes it easy to focus on every note you are playing (since there are only a few). Focusing on listening for a specific note in the phrase improves your ability to hear mistakes and play that note perfectly. Alternate your focus from one note to another to make every note perfect.

3. You give yourself a new way to challenge your skills (besides simply increasing metronome speed gradually in small increments).

Practicing guitar with short bursts of speed helps you master difficult phrases by dissecting them into small groups of notes. This helps you master a few notes at once. Then you add one at a time until the whole phrase is complete.

Here is a sample:

You select a guitar item to practice (such as a phrase containing 10 notes). You start playing only a few notes of the phrase at your top speed. Once you can play them easily without mistakes, you add another note. Then you add one note at a time until the entire phrase is mastered. Afterwards, you adjust the top speed and start again.
